The Lake Discovery cruise takes you to the southern-most point in Lake Champlain to the beginning of the Champlain Canal, where you'll experience the amazing engineering of the Canal's lock system.
We depart Burlington on day one, and sail south along the shoreline into the Otter Creek. A leisurely cruise up the 7-mile creek allows you to observe the fascinating waterfowl and the delicate plant life along the shore. Our first overnight is in Vergennes where you'll have time on your own to stroll through the city, visit the Vergennes Opera House (seasonal) and walk the historic path surrounding the renowned Vergennes Falls. Your steak and lobster welcome dinner will prepare you for songs by the campfire; complete with roasted marshmallows.
Enjoy breakfast underway on day two, as we head down the Otter Creek and arrive at the Basin Harbor Club. Free time allows you to visit the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, walk along the beach, swim, fish, ride a bike and take in the colors and aromas of the stunning display gardens.
We set sail and have lunch on board as we continue to head south into Arnold's Bay. Early evening we arrive in the "narrows" of the lake in Whitehall, New York, the beginning of the Champlain Canal. The canal opened in 1862 to expedite commerce to and from Lake Champlain to the Hudson River.
We overnight at the Lock 12 Marina where you have free time to visit this historic landmark. Known as the birthplace of the United States Navy, Benedict Arnold's Valcour Fleet was built in the summer of 1776 in this town, once named Skenesborough. Founded by British Army Captain Philip Skene in 1759, the town was the first settlement on Lake Champlain. Explore the Skenesborough Museum situated in a 1917 canal terminal.
Wake up to a "lock-in-lock-out" as the Moonlight Lady enters the lock and canal. Witness the fascinating maneuvers as the ship enters and exits the lock with ease. From the lock, we head north to Ft. Ticonderoga, New York, and on to Crown Point, a Revolutionary War fort and home of the Samuel de Champlain Lighthouse. The lighthouse was erected in 1909 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the lake. This year we celebrate the Quadricentennial, the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Champlain's discovery of the lake that bears his name.
This evening we overnight in Westport where there is time on your own to explore the village, visit the summer-stock performances at Depot Theater, ride a bike, fish and visit the shops and galleries.
Day four leads us north along the New York shoreline while enjoying a bountiful farewell breakfast. We arrive at the dock in Burlington, Vermont at approximately 10:15 am.
