Team Fabrications: The Great Boat Build-off

Imagine you’re afloat in the middle of Lake Champlain with nothing but a cardboard box and a paddle to get you to shore.
Build a Boat Project:
- Teams of 4-6 must brainstorm, plan, build, market and race a vessel of their own making: pontoons, Viking ships, catamarans, canoes, skulls, kayaks, ketches etc…
- Once built and presented to the other team, the boats are “tested” in open water, and only the successful stay dry.
- Teams will be given a brief introduction to the challenge. Thirty minutes planning time will be granted, followed by ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes of construction time.
- Each team will also be responsible for preparing a sales pitch as to why their boat is “better” than the rest!
- Boats will then be raced with one member of the team skippering. Prizes are awarded at the organization’s discretion.
- Construction materials are provided.
The Keys to Communication
This activity is an intense examination of your organizations communication skills. Using a series of exercises catering to your organization’s needs, we will first create a sense of community within your team. We will then slowly remove the “blinders” and really begin to peel back the layers of communication. We’ll engage you in the following puzzles:
- Assumptions Puzzle™: This exercise is designed to challenge your preconceived notions and assumptions held during interactions with others. This puzzle challenge not only invites but also requires you to look for alternative solutions to a simple task.
- Colourblind™: This activity will challenge your team to identify not only missing pieces to a puzzle, but also, the color of the missing pieces. The objective is for the team to establish the color and shape of each of the two missing pieces, without visually looking at the pieces and without exchanging or sharing the pieces. The only question the facilitator will answer is, “What color is this piece?”
- Simbols™ is the perfect complement to the popular Colourblind™ exercise. Simbols™ is a complex exercise, and groups are severely tested to organize themselves for success. In Simbols™ all the participants are sighted. However, they may not show their cards to any other participant. They must match the card to its proper location by “breaking the symbolic code” and matching their card to its neighbors
